Synthesis of Barium Titanate Nanoparticles
One
focus of the MRSEC is on nanoparticle self assembly to form complex
thin films and understanding the properties of these films. The
MRSEC is also interested in new ways of synthesizing nanoparticles
which could then be assembled into new films. Stephen O'Brien
and Louis Brus, in collaboration with Chris Murray of the IBM
T. J. Watson Research Center, have developed a method to synthesize
barium titanate nanoparticles by using colloidal chemistry. The
micrographs on the right were obtained with a transmission electron
microscope (TEM). They show that these barium titanate nanoparticles
are monodisperse (a) and exhibit crystallinity (b). These nanocrystals
are also seen to self assemble with order (c).
