MRSEC NYC School Visitation Program Extended to Junior High Schools
In 2001, the Columbia University MRSEC Educational Outreach Team
extended its program of visiting high schools in NYC to junior
high schools and middle schools. The first school visited was
JHS Junior High school in Brooklyn on November 15, 2001. Columbia
team members Ms. Oratai Jongpratreep, Ms. Jing Tang, Mr. Ruchuan
Liu and Mr. Matt Sfeir showed 9th grade chemistry and biochemistry
students the marvels of materials science and engineering through
hands-on demonstrations and discussions. The students at JHS 126
enjoyed learning new scientific concepts such as solid state phase
transformation, thermal conductivity of metals and ceramics and
superconductivity. The JHS 126 contact was Ms. Amber Howes of
the Biology and Chemistry Departments, who was a participant in
the Columbia Summer Research Program for Teachers in the summers
of 2001-2002, which is associated with the MRSEC Research Experiences
for Teachers (RET) program. Professor Siu-Wai Chan runs this visitation
program; it is coordinated by Ms. Alison Bisuo. As of January
2002, over 2000 NYC students had been involved in this visitation
program during a total of 16 visits to 13 different schools.
