Developing Partnerships with HBCUs: Xavier University at Louisiana and North Carolina A&T
This year the Columbia University MRSEC established new partnerships with two HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities), Xavier University of Louisiana and North Carolina AT&T. Prof. Herman visited both campuses early in 2007 and spoke to a range of faculty and administrators at each institution. To help start our joint research programs, Profs. Zhang and Bilyeu of Xavier spent one-two weeks at Columbia University during the summer of 2007 working on the magnetic, thermal, and mechanical properties of nanocrystals. These are the first such partnerships established by the Columbia MRSEC; these partnerships will be key components of the MRSEC?s plan to improve diversity.
