Columbia MRSEC McNair CITIES Demonstrations Developed for Use in NYC HS Classes
In late 2003, the Columbia MRSEC and Instructional Region 10 of the NYC Department of Education launched the ?Ron McNair Curriculum Integration To Interactively Engage Students (CITIES) Program?. In early 2004, professor and graduate students from the MRSEC and faculty from the George Washington High School campus and other high schools in NYC regularly met to begin the process of introducing demonstrations into the classroom experience to help engage students in NYS Regents chemistry, physics and earth science classes. This culminated in a program at George Washington High School library on May 5, 2004, in which high school teacher participants in the chemistry, physics and earth science working group demonstrated new and updated New York Regents science labs and shared them with their colleagues. These newly-created lesson plans included ones on electroplating copper (chemistry), demonstrating light-emitting diodes (LEDs) (physics), and comparing the intensity of light, such as solar light, at different angles of insolation (earth science). This early success has led to a continuation of this cooperative project for 2005.
