- Columbia University's NSF-sponsored interdisciplinary science centers Environmental Molecular Sciences Institute (EMSI), Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) and Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center (NSEC) support approximately 25 total undergraduates for a 10-week period each summer.
- Research intensive experience includes a stipend, travel expenses to and from the programs and on-campus housing.
- During the REU period, students are also involved with workshops, seminars, visits to local industry, recreational activities and a symposium of presentations by REU students.
- Collaboration with the Chemistry Department REU program also occurs on an academic and social level.
- The EMSI, MRSEC and NSEC NSF-sponsored centers draw Columbia University faculty mentors from Applied Physics and Math, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science and Physics.
- Students and faculty also work closely with nearby universities (including CCNY, Barnard College and Rowan University) and industry (including IBM and Bell Laboratories).
